IDENTIFYING YOUR AUDIENCE
I am going to swap out the word ‘CONSUMER’ for ‘AUDIENCE’ here, because I think I have taken my analogy as far as it can go and I want to talk to you strictly about the entertainment business now.
If you already have a Theatrical Agent and Manager, the audience you want to reach through Industry Inbox are the Casting Directors and Commercial Agents. If you don’t have any representation at all, maybe your audience is all of the above. You should look for the Representatives and Casting Directors in the general area you live. So if you booked a job at the last minute, you could reasonably show up in the next few hours.
If you live in New York and have representation there, it is totally acceptable to reach out to Casting Directors in the Los Angeles market to try to start a professional relationship. To ‘get on their radar’ as they say. But do not trick them into believing that you currently live in the Los Angeles market and are ready to audition for their projects. If you plan to move there, you can mention that. But be honest. Being dishonest (whether it is in marketing material, your resume or your special skills) will lead once again to another door you are locked out of. In any type of relationship, honesty is obviously key. And kindness also goes a long way. It will be a big turn off if you write something and come off as offensive, demanding or self entitled. Most of you would never dream of writing something rude, but unfortunately some people have blurred that line and it effects us all.
If you want to learn more about each Casting Director you are going to be sending these digital postcards to, there are a number of websites you can join to see what they are working on. IMDBpro and CastingAbout are two examples.
IMDBpro is also a great resource to see the current clients of the Agents and Managers you are reaching out to.
